EAST PEORIA, Ill. – The final round of the 2019 Great Lakes Valley Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament was everything one could want in a final round, as top-seeded Rockhurst University defeated No. 3 seed University of Missouri-St. Louis, 3-2 (25-16, 15-25, 25-13, 21-25, 15-6), on Sunday, Nov. 24 at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Ill., to repeat as GLVC Champions and win its third league title.
The match began with the teams trading points in the early portion of the set until the 21st-ranked Hawks went on a 7-0 run to take its lead to 21-13. They gave up just three more points en route to the 25-16 win to open the contest.
Missouri-St. Louis then responded with a similar run, following another back-and-forth start to the second set. With the score tied 11-11, the 22nd-ranked Tritons used a 14-4 run to pull away and secure the 25-15 win that tied the match at 1-all.
In Set 3, Rockhurst answered with an even bigger win at 25-13, as it trailed just once at 4-5 before retaking the lead at 7-6 and never trailing again. The Hawks hit .423 in that set and limited UMSL to a negative clip at -.032. But the Tritons weren’t ready to go home just yet, as they pushed the match to a fifth set thanks to a 25-21 victory in Set 4 on .361 hitting.
In the final stanza, save for a 1-1 tie to start the set, Rockhurst led the whole way from first point to final tally. The Hawks hit .375 and respectively used a 4-0, 3-0, and 5-0 run over the course of the set on the way to the deciding 15-6 final score.
GLVC Player of the Year, Karli Reichert, led all players with 18 kills and added 16 digs for a double-double in the win, while Mary Rolf hit .417 and added her own double-double with 11 kills and 10 blocks. In the loss, UMSL’s Charlotte Richards registered a double-double, as well, with 13 kills and 12 digs, while GLVC Libero of the Year Megan Woll nabbed a match-high 31 digs. Rockhurst hit .256 as a team, while UMSL hit at a .139 clip.
