INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis men’s and women’s programs lead after the first day of the 2019 Great Lakes Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, which are being held at the Athletics & Recreation Center (ARC) on the campus of UIndy.

The Greyhound men totaled 55 points in the opening day and hold a 26-point advantage over second-place McKendree University (29 points), while Missouri S&T (24) and Lewis University (24) are tied for third.  University of Illinois Springfield (16) is fifth, followed by Truman State University (13) and Bellarmine University (12) in sixth and seventh, respectively.  Drury University (8) and University of Southern Indiana (8) are tied for eighth, while Maryville University (6) owns 10th.  Quincy University and William Jewell College have yet to score in the 12-team field.

On the women’s side, UIndy owns 48 points, while Lewis (35), Missouri S&T (26), Maryville (20) and Bellarmine (17) follow in the top five.  Truman State (16), Illinois Springfield (12), McKendree (9), Drury (8) and William Jewell (3) round out sixth through 10th, while Southern Indiana (1) is 11th and Quincy has yet to score.

Individually, medals were earned in the women’s pentathlon, men’s pole vault, men’s and women’s weight throw, long jump, 5,000 meters, and Distance Medley Relay.

Lewis senior Cierra Pulliam defended her long jump title with a winning leap 6.02 meters, while UIndy sophomore Brady Walden was the lone men’s competitor to eclipse the 7-meter mark with his winning effort of 7.08 meters.

McKendree senior Monte Wolke and Lewis senior Marcus Holley both cleared 4.65 meters in the men’s pole vault, but Wolke earned the GLVC title and 10 first-place points with fewer misses.

In the throw cage, UIndy senior Hilary Paxson broke the GLVC record on her first attempt with an NCAA Championship automatic qualifying mark of 20.34 meters.  The league record of 19.93 meters was set last year in a winning effort by Paxson’s teammate, Katie Monk, who surpassed that distance with a heave of 20.07 meters on her final throw of this evening, coming up just short of Paxson.

In the men’s weight throw, UIndy senior Austin Hogan reset his personal best of 20.11 meters recorded just 11 days ago with a winning mark of 20.27 meters, shattering his GLVC Championship record of 19.68 meters from a year ago.

UIndy sophomore Lauren Bailey left no doubt on her home track as she scored a 29-second victory in the women’s 5,000 meters with a time of 17 minutes, 12.58 seconds.  On the men’s side, after USI freshman Austin Nolan won the event last year, it was UIS freshman Blake Jones crossing the line first this year in 15:14.47.  The Prairie Star newcomer was nearly five seconds faster than USI sophomore Grady Wilkinson.

In the DMR, the UIndy women bested McKendree by five seconds for the win with a time of 12:20.77, while the Lewis men were 10 seconds faster than Drury to capture first on the men’s side in 10:21.96.

It was a 1-2 finish for Missouri S&T in the pentathlon as seniors Skyler Ruszkowski (3,578 points) and Camille Baker (3,453) earned the Miners 18 of their 26 team points from day one.

Sunday’s docket opens with the conclusion of the men’s heptathlon, which is currently being led by Lewis junior Michael Lyons with 2,769 points – nearly 200 points ahead of second-place Ezekiel Buck (2,576) from S&T.

In Sunday’s field events, the men will compete in the finals of the high jump, triple jump and shot put, while the women will crown winners in the high jump, triple jump, shot put and pole vault.

Running events commence at 1:30 p.m. ET with the mile and 60-meter hurdles.  The 60-, 200-, 400-, 800-, 3,000-meter races will also take place before the event concludes with the 4x400-meter relay.
