INDIANAPOLIS – Records continued to fall and the University of Indianapolis men and Drury University women extended their respective leads after the third night of the 2019 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Swimming and Diving Championships, being held at the Crawfordsville Aquatics Center in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
The Greyhound men continue to distance themselves from second-place Missouri S&T, scoring 621 points for the meet after once again sweeping the diving competition. For the second-straight day, UIndy scored 53 points with a 1-2-3 finish as junior Payton Staman earned the 3-meter title with 504.65 points, just one day after claiming the 1-meter crown. Teammates Ben Rader (485.30) and Josh Zylstra (472.45) joined Staman on the podium for the diving sweep. Adding to the Greyhounds’ total this evening was 100 Backstroke winner Rodrigo Codo Berti, who touched the wall first in 47.83.
The Miners sit second overall with 549.5 points, paced by an impressive win in the 100 Backstroke by freshman Marco Flores in 53.96. McKendree University opened the night with sophomore Throstur Bjarnason touching the wall first in the 500-yard Freestyle in 4:26.88, and then the Bearcats closed the night with a winning effort in the 800 Freestyle Relay (6:32.08) to sit third overall with 467 points. Drury (441), University of Missouri-St. Louis (194.5), and Truman State University (182) are fourth through sixth, respectively, while Lewis University (154) and Bellarmine University (154) are tied for seventh. Bellarmine saw history made Friday as freshman Matthew Sims won the 200 Butterfly in 1:46.23 to become the first Knight to ever win gold the GLVC Championships. William Jewell College (115) and Maryville University (101) round out the 10-team field.
On the women’s side, Drury continues to dominate in the pool as the Panthers won all four individual events as well as the 800 Freestyle Relay. Junior Erica Dahlgren opened with a time of 4:55.36 to take the 500 Freestyle and was followed by freshman Laura Pareja with a winning effort of 54.81 in the 100 Backstroke. Junior Bailee Nunn continued to shine as she reset her own GLVC and pool record of 1:00.04 in the 100 Breaststroke with a winning time and NCAA DII A cut of 59.59. Drury freshman Tori Sopp once again bested her GLVC record that she set in the prelims as her 1:58.62 from this morning’s session of the 200 Butterfly was topped with a winning 1:57.97 in the finals. The Panthers topped off the night with a four-second victory in the 800 Freestyle Relay (7:26.71).
Among the other notables on Friday, UIndy sophomore Cassandra Kury joined Staman by sweeping both diving titles, taking the crown on the 1-meter earlier in the day with a GLVC record 455.15 points. Her effort topped the previous mark of 444.30 set by Drury’s Rebekah Laupp in 2014. Both Kury and Staman were recognized as the 2019 GLVC Divers of the Year.
Kury’s efforts helped UIndy to second place overall in the women’s standings with 626.5 points, followed by Truman State (318), McKendree (307.5) and Bellarmine (289) in the top five. Lewis (176), Missouri-St. Louis (168), William Jewell (158) and Maryville (108) rounded out the nine-team field.
