INDIANAPOLIS – University of Indianapolis and Rockhurst University have advanced to Sunday’s final match of the second-annual Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Lacrosse Championship Tournament at Key Stadium on the campus of UIndy in Indianapolis, Indiana.
In the first semifinal contest of the postseason, top-seeded Indianapolis defeated fourth-seeded University of Montevallo, 17-6, Friday evening. The match was close early, as the Falcons even took a 2-1 lead halfway through the first quarter, but it was the sixth-ranked Greyhounds that responded to that second goal with 10 unanswered for an 11-2 lead at halftime. Montevallo scored the first tally of the second half at 9:54 on the clock, but UIndy notched another three in a row to extend its lead to 14-3. The teams alternated the remaining six goals with the last one notched at 3:30 to conclude the scoring. All-GLVC honorees Parker Kump and Brian Robb paced the field with four goals each, while Kump added a pair of assists for a game-high six points. UIndy held a 58-26 advantage in shots with a 30-14 edge in shots on goal, while the Hounds grabbed 40 ground balls to the Falcons’ 20.
In the nightcap, No. 2 seed Rockhurst used a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter to help secure an 18-13 win over No. 3 seed Maryville University and claim its first trip to the GLVC championship. The match started as a very back-and-forth meeting with Rockhurst pulling ahead 2-0 within the first minute of play before Maryville went for three-straight goals over the next three minutes. The Hawks responded with two more to go ahead 4-3 with 5:22 left in the first period, but, eventually, the tit-for-tat affair ended with the intermission scoreboard reading 6-6. The score would eventually be deadlocked again at 10-all just two minutes into the fourth frame before the 14th-ranked Hawks ran away with seven in a row, leaving just 6:06 for the Saints to work with. They would register a trio of goals in the remaining 5:00, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit created by Rockhurst. Despite the loss, GLVC Player of the Year Lucas Shafer scored a game- and career-high eight goals, adding two assists for the game-high 10 points, while Drake O’Neill went for a team-high seven points on six goals and an assist in the win. Rockhurst led Maryville 63-37 in total shots and 36-26 in shots on goal, led 47-25 in ground balls, and won 28 faceoffs to Maryville’s seven.
The Greyhounds and Hawks will now meet at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday to determine the second GLVC Men’s Lacrosse Champion.
