INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced 152 men’s and women’s teams Monday as recipients of the 2018-19 GEICO Team Academic All-GLVC Award. The GLVC recognizes each team from member institutions that have maintained a 3.30 grade point average for the academic year. The total of 152 honorees surpasses the previous Conference record of 149 set last year.

The McKendree University women’s soccer program registered the Conference’s highest team GPA during the 2018-19 academic year with a 3.79. Placing second overall was the Maryville University women’s cross country team at 3.78, followed by University of Illinois Springfield women’s tennis squad at 3.77.  The Drury University women’s tennis and Rockhurst University women’s basketball programs tied for fourth at 3.74.

The GLVC set a new league record this year with 10 member institutions finishing with 10 or more teams at or above a 3.30.  The Conference had the previous best of eight schools in each of the past two years, after setting league marks in 2016 (seven) and 2015 (five).  Maryville University, which set a league record with 16 meeting the 3.30 standard last year, tied Drury with 14 programs each, followed by the University of Indianapolis with 13, and Bellarmine University, McKendree, and William Jewell College with 12 teams apiece.

Eleven of the GLVC’s 14 institutions either maintained or increased their totals from a year ago. Drury and Missouri S&T led the league in largest academic growth by a GLVC school, having both increased their total by four teams, as the Panthers went from 10 to 14 and the Miners made a jump from seven to 11.

Of the 152 honored programs, 108 came from women’s sports and 44 from the men’s side, which marks a decrease of one and an increase of four, respectively, from a year ago.

Women’s soccer and volleyball were the sports with the most honors, as all 14 member institutions saw their respective squads above a 3.30.  Women’s track and field also posted a perfect mark as all 12 sponsored programs achieved the 3.30 standard.  Among the other notables, softball followed with 13 school winners, while women’s cross country, women’s basketball, and women’s tennis boasted 12 each.  Of the nine women’s sports, which include indoor and outdoor track and field as one, eight had more than 85 percent of its participating schools achieve the GPA milestone, including soccer (14/14, 100%), volleyball (14/14, 100%), track and field (12/12, 100%), softball (13/14, 93%), cross country (12/13, 92%), tennis (12/13, 92%), swimming and diving (8/9, 89%), and basketball (12/14, 86%).  Golf (11/14) was just shy of the mark at 79 percent.

On the men’s side, nine of 12 golf teams and nine of 13 tennis programs earned the honor, followed by soccer with seven squads and swimming and diving with six honorees.  Baseball and cross country each had four teams, while track and field (3), basketball (1) and wrestling (1) rounded out the 44 programs.

For the third-straight season, women’s tennis was the sport most commonly found atop each school’s list with five. The remaining nine schools were led by women’s soccer (3), women’s basketball (2), women’s cross country (2), women’s golf (1), and men’s tennis (1).
