INDIANAPOLIS – Fourteen Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) teams battled unseasonably warm weather at the GLVC East and West Division races this past weekend to secure their starting positions for the GLVC Cross Country Championship on Oct. 24.

The top four schools from each race earned the right to vie for the league title in GLVC Championships “A” race on Oct. 24, while the remaining schools will compete in the “B” race.

At the GLVC West Divisional this past Friday, held at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois, seven men’s and women’s teams got an early preview of the GLVC Championship course in sunny, 82-degree weather.

On the men’s side, host Lindenwood took first place with a total of 50 points, highlighted by four runners in the top 10, including sophomore Louis Moreau with a winning 8,000-meter time of 25 minutes, 59.13 seconds.  Southwest Baptist finished second with 57 points, while Drury and Missouri S&T each scored 85 points to claim the final two qualifying spots for the GLVC Championship.  Maryville (112), Truman State (113) and Rockhurst (206) rounded out the field.

In the women’s 6,000-meter meet, defending GLVC Champion Elysia Burgos of Southwest Baptist led a host of five Bearcats in the top nine with a winning time of 21:30.48.  SBU placed first overall with 27 points, followed by Drury (35), Truman State (86) and Lindenwood (95).  Missouri S&T (113), Rockhurst (149) and Maryville (225) closed out the seven-team race.

At the East Divisional, which was hosted by Illinois Springfield on Saturday, Lewis (40) outpaced Southern Indiana (47) for the men’s title as both teams placed all five scorers inside the top 15.  Led by the 8K race winner Blake Jones (24:06.30), Illinois Springfield placed third with 68 points, followed by Indianapolis (71).  Missouri-St. Louis (155) debuted with a fifth-place result, while McKendree and Quincy did not score as a team.
