UMSL, Truman to Play for GLVC Men’s Basketball Title

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The semifinals of the 2020 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament was played Friday evening in First Community Arena at the Vadalabene Center on the campus of SIU Edwardsville in Edwardsville, Illinois, as the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Truman State University gleaned a semifinal win to advance to Championship Sunday. The title game will take place tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. Central Time.

This will be the first meeting for the two teams in the final round, as the Tritons will be making their first-ever appearance in the title tilt and the Bulldogs will make the trip for the second time in program history with their first visit coming in 2018.
 
SATURDAY SEMIFINAL RESULTS

#1 Missouri-St. Louis 78, #4 Southern Indiana 63

After winning a share of the GLVC Regular Season title, UMSL used a 34-20 halftime advantage to defeat Southern Indiana in the semifinals and earn its first-ever appearance in the tournament championship game. The 16th-ranked Tritons shot 51.7 percent (30-of-58) and forced the Screaming Eagles into 21 turnovers, which led to a 20-4 advantage in points off turnovers. Jose Grubbs scored a team-high 17 points, while Jalen Wilkens-McCoy came off the bench for 15 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Clayton Hughes also had a big game off the bench for USI, scoring a game-high 18 points, while Emmanuel Little had a game-high 12 boards to go with 10 points.
 
#3 Truman State 88, #2 Indianapolis 77

Three-point shooting helped Truman get by UIndy, as the Bulldogs were 10-of-20 (.500) from beyond the arc, while the Greyhounds mustered just seven triples on 27 attempts. Overall, Truman had four score in double figures, including GLVC Player of the Year, Brodric Thomas with a game-high 32 – just two shy of his career-high. He also grabbed 14 rebounds, while five Hounds also tallied double digit scoring marks.

Single-session tickets for the championship are $20 for adults and $5 for students with a valid ID and youth 6-17 in age, while children ages 5 and under are admitted free of charge, but must be accompanied by an adult.

FRIDAY QUARTERFINAL RESULTS

#3 Truman State 85, #6 Rockhurst 68

Truman led by just three at the half, 36-33, but left no doubt in the second frame by scoring 49 points to Rockhurst’s 35. Brodric Thomas and Cade McKnight both scored a game-high 23 points to pace Truman in its quarterfinal win over Rockhurst. Despite the Hawks holding an advantage in points off turnovers (14-5), second-chance points (8-0), and points in the paint (36-32), the Bulldogs shot better from the field, the three and the foul line. 

#4 Southern Indiana 76, #5 Bellarmine 73

Fans were treated to an exciting finish to the quarterfinal round of action with a classic rivalry game that saw eight ties and 11 lead changes – all in the second half – and ultimately came down to the wire in the final minutes of play, as Southern Indiana hit a pair of free throws with 2-seconds left to take the three-point lead and followed with a blocked shot on the final three-point attempt by Bellarmine. Despite the Knights holding the wire-to-wire first-half lead, the Screaming Eagles were able to overcome 20 turnovers by shooting 53.2 percent from the field (25-for-47) and dominating the glass, 38-19, to produce a 19-5 advantage in second-chance points. Joe Laravie had a team-high 21 points for USI, while Parker Chitty – a player who has averaged 2.9 points per game this season – scored a game-high 27 points to lead Bellarmine.
 

THURSDAY QUARTERFINAL RESULTS

#1 Missouri-St. Louis 53, #8 Drury 51

In buzzer-beater fashion, top-seeded and 16th-ranked UMSL survived an upset bid by 8-seed Drury thanks to Yaakeema Rose Jr., who hit a three-pointer less than one second before time expired. He scored seven in the contest, while Jose Grubbs had a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds, while the Panthers were led by Conley Garrison’s game-high 25 points.

#2 Indianapolis 80, #7 Southwest Baptist 68

Seventh-seeded Southwest Baptist held a 38-34 halftime lead, and kept it close through much of the second half, but 2-seed and 13th-ranked UIndy was able to pull away late for the eventual 12-point victory. Cory Miller Jr. paced the Hounds with 20 points in leading four others with double figures. Damian Prgomet had a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds in the loss for SBU.
