I was incredibly sad when I received the news that I would not be able to compete in my final track season as a Bellarmine student-athlete. Now that I have had time to accept these circumstances and reflect back on my college career, I realize how thankful I am for this experience. I am beyond grateful for the 11 seasons that I got to experience as a student-athlete.
On the morning that we found out about the season's unexpected ending, we were supposed to run a hard workout. Our coach realized that we were probably not up for it after the news. A teammate of mine made the comment that the seniors should make the call.
My best friend and I are the only seniors on our team and she agreed with me when I said that I needed one more. I needed one more workout on Bellarmine's track as a college athlete. We could not control that our last race at indoor conference was unknowingly the last one as a student-athlete. However, we could control what our last workout was and how we would end our careers.
My teammates were so selfless and made sure that our last workout was unforgettable. The sun was out, music was playing, and there were nothing but smiles on our faces. We cried when it was over, but it was the closure we needed to accept what this season was. I realized that these unforeseen circumstances may have taken away my last track season, but it will never take away the amazing friends that this team has brought into my life.
I am so appreciative of my coaches and teammates and the impact they have had throughout my journey. The endless memories, the lifelong friendships and the incredible self-growth that I have gained as a student-athlete was more than I could have ever expected it to be.
My career as a student-athlete may have come to an end, but my running career is anything but over.
