On Thursday, March 12, I was playing golf and preparing to head back down to school before we left for our first tournament of the year. I received a text from our coach in our team group chat stating that our tournament in Mississippi was canceled, but that the rest of our season was still a go. I did not even get the chance to finish the front nine before my phone blew up with phone calls and texts. One of the texts was a screenshot that the NCAA had declared they were canceling remaining championships for the winter/spring seasons. My heart instantly sunk.
With being a senior, I felt like everything I had been working towards was being taken in front of my eyes and I had no control over the situation. I was thinking about that I had played my last college tournament without knowledge. I was even more upset that the cancelation of our spring season meant that there would be no team bonding over the tournaments we were supposed to play.
Flash forward to March 30. My classes have all moved online, campus housing made their residents vacate, and graduation is postponed. While these last couple of weeks have been extremely tough, it has made me realized the things that are most important to me: my family, teammates, and my sport.
I am extremely grateful for my professors who have been flexible and kind with the transition of our online classes. I am grateful that my school has a fantastic athletic department that cares about their athletes. Lastly, I am beyond grateful to be in a conference who also cares about their athletes well-being and relays that in times of uncertainty.
