I was devastated when I heard the news about schools shutting down and seasons being canceled. I still can’t put into words how I am feeling, but it feels like a huge chunk of me is on pause and I am struggling to figure out where to go now. I was really looking forward to this outdoor season because I just recently came back from a study abroad trip in New York and was unable to be with my family (my team) all first semester, meaning I also missed preseason.
I went into indoor season and was not happy with my times, nor was I confident in my running abilities. Furthermore, my confidence in myself starting falling as well, and it was scary. I knew that things wouldn’t get better unless I started seeking help. So I looked to God to guide me and strengthen me, but I also called on my close friends and family to be there for me as well.
I got into contact with a sports counselor at my school and she really helped me get back on track. My confidence is still an uphill battle everyday, but I felt like I was starting to get there again. I kept working and pushing through these struggles and I ended up doing pretty decent in indoor conference. I placed in the 200 meters when I was projected not to score at all, and I also won the 60 meter-dash overall. With that being said, I was hungry for the outdoor season and ready to keep working to make it to nationals and prove to myself that I can do this.
However, I feel like God put another obstacle in my way with this virus and I am really upset and sad about the whole thing. I know that I will miss my wonderful team and amazing coaches the most. I am hopeful that we will all get through this hard time and know that there’s a plan.
So in this time, we must just support one another and keep that mindset of wanting to get better everyday. Know that all of this work that we put in everyday is not for nothing, and one day we will see it come to fruition. Obstacles will always be in the way of reaching your goals, but it’s up to you to decide if you want to overcome those obstacles. And as student-athletes, I feel like we can do it. I have faith that everything will work out as it should be. And to the seniors, I will miss them dearly. I want the seniors to know that their hard work does not go unnoticed and their leadership will forever be cherished. I want them to know that this bump in the road should not define them and they should continue their journey in life and know that everything will work out.
