INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced a league-record 207 men’s and women’s teams Monday as recipients of the 2019-20 GEICO Team Academic All-GLVC Award. The GLVC recognizes each team from member institutions that have maintained a 3.30 grade point average for the academic year. The total of 207 honorees shatters the previous Conference record of 152 set last year.
The Southwest Baptist University women’s tennis program registered the Conference’s highest team GPA during the 2018-19 academic year with a 3.91. Placing second overall was the University of Illinois Springfield’s women’s tennis team at 3.89, followed by University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s tennis squad at 3.88. The University of Indianapolis women’s tennis program (3.85) and the Maryville University men’s golf team (3.84) rounded out the top five.
The GLVC set a new league record this year with 13 member institutions finishing with 10 or more teams at or above a 3.30, besting the previous league high of 10 schools set last year. Maryville University set a new Conference mark with 17 sports meeting the 3.30 standard, just two years after the Saints set the previous best with 16 in 2017-18.
All 14 GLVC either maintained or increased their totals from a year ago. Lewis led the league in largest academic growth by a GLVC school, having increased their total by eight teams, as the Flyers went from seven to 15.
Of the 207 honored programs, 138 came from women’s sports and 69 from the men’s side.
Three league sports – women’s soccer (16), women’s tennis (15), and women’s swimming (10) – saw all of their teams above the 3.30 standard. Among the other notables, women’s golf, softball, and volleyball followed with 15 school winners, while men’s golf, women’s cross country, and women’s track and field boasted 13 each.
Of the 11 women’s sports, which include indoor and outdoor track and field as one, 10 had more than 80 percent of its participating schools achieve the GPA milestone, including soccer (16/16, 100%), tennis (15/15, 100%), swimming (10/10, 100%), basketball (15/16, 94%), golf (15/16, 94%), softball (15/16, 94%), volleyball (15/16, 94%), track and field (13/14, 93%), cross country (13/15, 87%), and bowling (5/6, 83%). Lacrosse (5/7) was just shy of the mark at 71 percent.
On the men’s side, 13 of 14 golf teams and 13 of the 14 tennis squads earned the honor, followed by soccer (10), baseball (9), swimming (7), cross country (6), track and field (5), basketball (4) and wrestling (2) to round out the 69 programs.
For the fourth-straight season, women’s tennis was the sport most commonly found atop each school’s list with five. The remaining 12 schools were led by women’s basketball (3), women’s soccer (3), women’s cross country (2), women’s golf (2), women’s bowling (1), and men’s golf (1).
