ELKHART, Ind. – The Drury University men and Lindenwood University women will head into the final day of the 2021 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Swimming and Diving Championships after a strong third night's showing at the eighth annual league meet.
Lindenwood sophomore Elle Christie and University of Indianapolis sophomore Mikaela Starr shared
GLVC women’s Co-Diver of the Year in the morning, as each earned 60 points between the 1m and 3m dives. Christie claimed the 1m title on Wednesday, while Starr finished the 3m with gold. Each placed second in the opposite event, resulting in a tie.
The Drury men (1,215.5 points) increased their lead over second-place UIndy (1,100.5) on Friday, with Lindenwood sitting in third (1012.5). Missouri S&T (910.5) and McKendree University (795.5) each had big days in the pool to solidify their respective top-five position. Lewis University (505) remains in sixth, while the following teams rank as follows: William Jewell College (390.5), University of Missouri-St. Louis (300), Truman State University (282), and Maryville University (140).
Lindenwood regained its advantage on Friday on the women’s side, running its total up to 1,396 points to hold a slight 59-tally lead over Drury (1,337). UIndy is also right in the thick of it, securing 1,298 points thus far. McKendree (678), Truman (547.5), and Lewis (522) sit right in the middle of the standings, while Missouri-St. Louis (479), William Jewell (273), and Maryville (247.5) close out the team scores.
Two more records were broken on the men’s side on Friday, as
Fabio Dalu set a new league standard for the third time during the Championships. The sophomore snapped the 500 freestyle mark by a half-second to earn first place in the event, with UIndy’s Christian Hedeen and Sebastian Wenk rounding out the podium.
Missouri S&T’s Joshua Umrysh joined in on the fun, squeaking past the 100 breaststroke record by .11 seconds to earn the gold.
Jeron Thompson became the first Greyhound to win an individual event this week, tying the league’s 100 backstroke record at 47.11. McKendree’s DaVante Carey and Drury’s Nathan Bighetti finished second and third, respectively.
The top 12 in the 200 butterfly finished the race with B-cut times, including winner
James Brown from Drury. The junior out of Northern Ireland touched the wall in 1:46.61 after entering the event with the highest seed time.
The
Drury 800 free relay team nearly joined the record-breaking club to close the men’s session on Friday, earning the win just .03 seconds from tying the league standard set in 2017. Lindenwood (silver) and McKendree (bronze) also nabbed NCAA provisional times.
The
UIndy 800 free relay squad capped the night session with the second record of the night, speeding to an NCAA provisional time of 7:23.06 for the gold to end the evening.
Marizel van Jaarsveld, who competed as part of the relay team moments later, claimed first place in the 200 butterfly in Friday’s penultimate event with a 1:59.86 mark.
It was
all Drury in the 500 free, as Bec Cross (4:51.65) earned first place ahead of teammates Marina Amorim and Allison Weber. Fellow
Panther Laura Pareja followed up with a gold showing of her own, setting a new league standard in the 100 back with a wall-touch of 53.13.
Lindenwood’s
Beata Maruszczyk made her way up to the podium once again, this time accepting gold in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.93. Teammate Lexie Winnett, along with Truman’s Natalie Galluzzo, tied for silver at 1:02.51.
The fourth and final day of the GLVC Championships from the Elkhart Health and Aquatics Center begins Saturday with the men’s 1m dive starting at 9:30 a.m. Sessions at 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. will follow with the schedule of events
