GLVC PRS Standings
INDIANAPOLIS - The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) has adopted new qualifying procedures for its Volleyball Championship Tournament, it was officially released Tuesday. The GLVC Point Rating System (PRS) has been used for men's and women's basketball tournament qualifying since the 2017-18 season and will be implemented for the 2020-21 volleyball season to determine the top-eight teams that will advance to the postseason, which will be held April 16-18 at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria, Illinois.
In past years, the eight-team tournament was seeded based on Conference winning percentage. However, due to the unusual nature of the season this year, and accounting for an unbalanced number of games for each team based on possible cancelations due to COVID-19 protocol, as well as the fact that some matches will be played at neutral sites, the league's Athletics Directors voted to adopt the PRS rankings to address this as a one-time solution.
The GLVC Point Rating System is designed to provide a team more points for a win on the road or at home against top competition based on Conference winning percentage, while distributing fewer points for a win against weaker competition. Points are also distributed for losses, with more points awarded for a loss against stronger competition versus if the team lost at home or on the road to a struggling team.
The eight teams with the highest ratings at the end of the regular season will qualify for the postseason tournament. In the event of a tie, the league's existing tiebreak criteria will be applied as outlined in Section 14.C.4 of the GLVC Handbook, which can also be found below.
The GLVC website will continue to display the three five-team divisions on its standings page, as divisional titles will be awarded at the conclusion of the regular season. However, the listed Conference winning percentage on the standings will no longer be used to qualify teams for the tournament. A given team's win or loss early in the Conference season will have an assigned point value based on their opponent's winning percentage, although that point value is likely to fluctuate should that opponent improve or weaken throughout the remainder of the season.
At the end of the season, each team's ratings will be determined by results against opponents' winning percentage as they ended the regular season, not what it was when the result occurred. For example: Team A defeats Team B at home to start the season. If Team B finishes the regular season 17-1, then Team A would record 6.5 points for that win. If Team B goes 0-18, then Team A would record 3 points for that win.
The GLVC will publish an updated document with current ratings and team-by-team point distribution three more times this season on March 30, April 6, and April 10 when the tournament bracket and seeds are released. This information will be made available at the bottom of the standings on GLVCsports.com.
In the first rankings release, Lewis leads the way in the standings with a rating of 4.85 through 13 matches followed by Missouri-St. Louis at 4.04 after 12 matches. Quincy and Southern Indiana are tied for third with a rating of 3.59 after 14 contests, while Missouri S&T is close behind in fifth with a 3.59 rating through 14 matches and Truman State is rated at 3.50 through 10 matches in sixth. Lindenwood (3.21) and Rockhurst (2.95) round out the top-eight after 13 and 11 contests, respectively, in seventh and eighth. Drury is on the outside looking in at No. 9 with a 2.91 rating after 14 matches.
