Tournament Bracket
INDIANAPOLIS - The 2020-21 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Soccer Championship Tournament bracket was released Friday night by the Conference office. The University of Indianapolis earned the No. 1 seed in the eight-team tournament, followed by No. 2 Maryville University, No. 3 Quincy University, and No. 4 Lewis University. All four teams will host quarterfinal action on Monday, April 19, as the opening round of the GLVC Championship Tournament commences.
Seedings for this year's postseason were set to be based on a point system, where a win earned three points and a tie earned one. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some games were canceled and unable to be rescheduled, so an averaging system was utilized to determine seeds for this spring.
Top-seeded and Regular Season Champion Indianapolis finished with an 11-0-3 record for 36 points and 2.57 points per game average. The fourth-ranked Greyhounds will welcome No. 8 University of Illinois Springfield (4-3-3, 15 points, 1.50 points per game) to Indianapolis, Ind., on Monday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time for opening-round action. UIndy is entering the postseason for the eighth-straight season and 28th overall, while Illinois Springfield will be making its fourth attempt at capturing a GLVC Championship crown after swiping up the final seed over Drury University (7-7, 21, 1.50) due to a head-to-head tiebreaker when UIS beat the Panthers, 1-0, on April 9. On March 12, the Hounds and Prairie Stars tied 0-0 in Indianapolis.
Twelfth-ranked Maryville (9-4-1, 28, 2.00) will play in its fifth-straight postseason event when it hosts No. 7 McKendree (6-5-2, 20, 1.54) on Monday in St. Louis, Mo., at 1 p.m. Central Time. The Saints earned the 2-seed over Quincy University in a head-to-head tiebreaker due to its 3-1 home win in the first game of the season on Feb. 26. In their third-straight and overall league postseason, the Bearcats will look to avenge a 3-0 road loss at Maryville on April 1.
No. 3 seed Quincy (9-4-1, 28, 2.00) hosts No. 6 seed University of Southern Indiana (7-5-1, 22, 1.69) on Monday at a time to be determined in Quincy, Ill. The Hawks missed out on the second seed after losing a tiebreaker to Maryville but will still be making their 21st appearance in the GLVC Tournament and 10th in the last 12 years. The Screaming Eagles garnered their sixth bid in a row and 24th overall. On March 12, USI topped Quincy, 2-1, at home.
No. 4 Lewis University (8-5-1, 25, 1.79) will serve as host to fifth-seeded University of Missouri-St. Louis (7-4-3, 24, 1.71) at 4 p.m. CT Monday in Romeoville, Ill. UMSL defeated Lewis at home, 1-0, in the season's first GLVC contest on Feb. 26. The Flyers enter their league-best 32nd Conference championship but first since 2017, while the Tritons earn their 13th berth overall and first since 2016.
Each of the four quarterfinal winners will advance to the GLVC Championship Tournament semifinals, which will be hosted for the first time at Hunter Stadium on campus at Lindenwood. The two semifinal contests will be played at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. CT Friday, April 23, while the finals will take place Sunday, April 25 at 12 p.m. Last year, former league member and second-seeded Bellarmine University captured the 2019 GLVC Championship - its first and last in program history - with a 3-2 result against No. 1 McKendree.
