Top Four Seeds Advance to GLVC Men's Soccer Semifinals

INDIANAPOLIS – The 2020-21 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament remains chalk through the quarterfinals, as the top four seeds all advanced on Monday. The semifinals and Championship match will be held on the campus of Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., April 23-25.  
 
No. 1 University of Indianapolis, No. 2 Maryville University, No. 3 Quincy University, and No. 4 Lewis University earned wins on their home pitch, as three one-score matches highlighted the evening. The second-seeded Saints will play the third-seeded Hawks at 11 a.m. CT at Hunter Stadium, while the top-seeded Greyhounds battle the fourth-seeded Flyers at 1:30 p.m. CT.

Monday's quarterfinals were held on the campus of the higher seed.

#2 Maryville 3, #7 McKendree 0

Mirza Hasecic put the Saints (10-4-1) on the scoreboard in the 29’, netting his 12th goal of the season unassisted. Victor DeGiorgio added a score just before halftime, capitalizing on a pass from Eyob Tadesse in the 41’ to give Maryville a 2-nil advantage. Hasecic tallied his second of the afternoon in the 51’, as Cedric Sengl joined Tadesse with the helpers. The Saints’ defense proved as stout as the offense, limiting McKendree to just one total shot. Maryville keeper Liam Walraven made one save to earn the clean sheet.

In a match full of chances, Aubrey Reis found the back of the net in the 54’ to lift Quincy (10-4-1) to a 1-0 win over visiting USI on Monday. The teams combined for 29 shots, including 13 on frame, on the night. The Screaming Eagles put five shots on goal in the second half in their pursuit of a comeback, with Graham Miller nearly scoring the equalizer with one second remaining; however, Quincy netminder Michele Barlette capped the win with his sixth of the night. Jack Rhead and Alsadiq Hasan were credited with assists on the score from Reis.

After nearly 80 scoreless minutes, Jimmy Mwanga sent Lewis (9-5-1) into the semifinals with a goal in the 102’ on Monday evening. Mwanga’s teammate Matt Budreck gave the Flyers an early 1-0 lead, as Jayson Iniguez found the junior less than 200 seconds after the opening whistle. However, Missouri-St. Louis’ Garett Bass knotted the match at one apiece in the 23’, scoring his third goal of the season unassisted. Prior to Mwanga’s game-winner, the Flyers put seven shots on goal and sent 13 shots in UMSL keeper Anton Mukhin’s direction.

The No. 4 Greyhounds (12-0-3) outlasted the eighth-seeded Prairie Stars at Key Stadium, using a goal from Seth Ward 43 ticks into the second half to advance to their first GLVC semifinal since 2017. UIndy, which has allowed just five goals all season, surrendered seven shots and two on frame in the win, as Dimitrios Karousos picked up the shutout. Jeremy Fechtman was credited with the assist on Ward’s goal in the 46’.
