FISHERS, Ind. – The University of Indianapolis squad and University of Missouri-St. Louis senior Emma Thorngren hold the team and individual leads, respectively, after the opening day of the 2021 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Women’s Golf Championship at The Hawthorns Golf and Country Club in Fishers, Indiana.
Eight-time defending GLVC champion Indianapolis opened with a score of 304 – 15 strokes better than the University of Missouri-St. Louis, which sits in second with a 319. The University of Illinois Springfield clocked in at third with its 330, while Lewis University is close behind in fourth with a 333. A three-way tie for fifth follows between Maryville University, Lindenwood University, and McKendree University all with scores of 335. One point separates each of the next three teams, as the University of Southern Indiana (340), Missouri S&T (341), and Drury (342) respectively sit eighth, ninth, and 10th. William Jewell College (345) trails Drury University in 11th by just three strokes, while Truman State University's 354 has it in 12th place after one round. Just one point is the difference between Rockhurst University (361) and Quincy University (362) in 13th and 14th, respectively, while Southwest Baptist University (405) rounds out the field in 15th.
Individually, 12 players shot sub-80 rounds, including Thorngren's 73 and Maryville senior Carmen Villaverde's 74 for second place. A three-way tie for third follows between UIndy teammates sophomore Hunter Nugent and senior Pilar Echeverria, as well as William Jewell sophomore Kayte Vausbinder. The lone player in sixth was Greyhounds junior Elyse Stasil with a 76 on the par-72, 6,028-yard layout. Two players follow with a 78 in seventh, while four shot a 79 to be knotted in ninth place.
Saturday’s second round of stroke play begins at 8 a.m. Eastern Time on both No. 1 and 10 tees.
