INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced Tuesday afternoon its 2021 All-Conference Men’s Golf team and major award winners, with 11 student-athletes garnering recognition, 13 earning James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award nominees, and Missouri S&T voted as the team sportsmanship winner.
University of Indianapolis led the All-GLVC squad with four selections, while University of Missouri-St. Louis garnered three and league champion Maryville University received two nods. University of Illinois Springfield and Missouri S&T also snagged one player apiece on the team.
UIndy’s Oliver Mast was voted Player of the Year for the second in three seasons on Tuesday, adding to his 2019 award. The senior is the fourth straight Greyhound to earn top recognition from the league’s coaches, and first to repeat as GLVC Player of the Year since Graham McAree in 2016 and 2018. Mast was named GLVC Player of the Week three times this season, most recently on April 9 after winning medalist honors at the Beu Mussatto Invitational. The Fortville, Ind., product ranks No. 31 in NCAA DII with a 71.81 scoring average this spring and is second with 114 birdies.
Earning medalist accolades at the GLVC Championship in April, Missouri S&T’s Carl Miltun was named Freshman of the Year by the coaches. The rookie out of Gilbert, Ariz., averaged 74.85 per round this season, carding a season-low 66 in the Midwest Regional in Eureka, Mo., this past fall. Miltun recorded four top-five finishes this season and added another top-10 nod at the Music City Invitational. Miltun is the first in Missouri S&T history to earn a GLVC men’s golf major award.
After leading his team to a second straight GLVC crown, Maryville mentor Scott Thomas earned Coach of the Year accolades on Tuesday. Thomas is the second Maryville coach to win the award and first since Glenn Paulus secured back-to-back honors in 2018 and 2019. The second-seeded Saints repeated as league champions last month, knocking off top-seeded UIndy in the championship match. Two Saints were named All-GLVC on Tuesday, with Alex Locke and Will Holan garnering recognition.
Joining Holan, Locke, Mast, and Miltun are Illinois Springfield’s Maxwell Schmidtke; UIndy’s Keegan Bronnenberg, Ian Carroll, and Erik Edwards; and Missouri-St. Louis’ Chris Ferris, Juan Antonio Padilla, and Joel Sylven.
The league also recognized 13 GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award nominees and the team award winner, Missouri S&T. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced in May.
