UIndy Captures 12th GLVC Women’s Tennis Title in 2021

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – No. 1-ranked and the East’s top seed University of Indianapolis swept 13th-ranked and the West’s top seed Southwest Baptist University, 4-0, in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Women’s Tennis Championship on Sunday at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex in Romeoville, Illinois, to claim its league-best 12th title and fourth in six years.

The No. 3 doubles squad of Maria Solnyshkina and Sofia Sharonova were first to finish for the Greyhounds, taking a 6-1 win over Southwest Baptist’s Lola Cincunegui and Diana Cabrera. The No. 1 doubles pair of Nikol Alekseeva and Anna Novikova clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win past Dona Abohabaga and Constanca Crespo. The No. 2 doubles match went unfinished between UIndy’s Kristina Lagoda and Alina Kislitskaya and SBU’s Catarina Zheng and Elsa Pascual.
 
Lagoda was the first to take a singles win, earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles over Zheng. Alekseeva won the team’s third point at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0, past Abohabaga. Novikova then clinched the 2021 GLVC Championship with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 against Cabrera.

At the conclusion of the Championship, UIndy head coach Malik Tabet was named GLVC Coach of the Year for the third time. His Greyhounds now await the NCAA Selection Show on May 4 to determine their Regional fate. The 2021 NCAA Division II Championships will be played May 19-21 in Surprise, Ariz., at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
