Lebanon, Ill. – The University of Indianapolis women’s lacrosse team avenged an earlier loss to top-seeded and No. 1 Lindenwood University on Sunday, defeating the Lions to earn the inaugural Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Championship from Leemon Field, 12-9.

The second-seeded and No. 2 Greyhounds (14-1) jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening half, with Grace Gunneson netting a pair of scores in the first 20 minutes. After Lindenwood (13-1) knotted the game at five apiece with just over a minute left before the break, Abigail Lagos secured a UIndy halftime lead with her second goal with 27 seconds on the scoreboard.

UIndy came out firing in the second half, stretching its lead to 10-5 in less than nine minutes. The closest the Lions got the rest of the way was a three-goal deficit, as Lagos put her signature on the victory with a hat trick as time ticked down.

Grace Gunneson led the Greyhounds with five points on four goals and one assist, while Peyton Romig secured seven draw controls and two ground balls. Netminder Cassidy King made eight saves between the pipes for the Greyhounds. UIndy dominated at the draw circle, 19-4.

Carly Fedorowski netted a hat trick for Lindenwood, while also finishing with two caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls.

The NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse selection show will take place Sunday, May 9 on NCAA.com. The Greyhounds and Lions, along with McKendree University, appeared under consideration in last week’s release.
