INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced 191 men’s and women’s teams Monday as recipients of the 2020-21 Team Academic All-GLVC Award. The GLVC recognizes each team from member institutions that have maintained a 3.30 grade point average for the academic year. The total of 191 honorees is shy of last year’s record-breaking total of 207 but well above the previous record from 2018-19 of 152.
The University of Illinois Springfield women’s tennis program registered the Conference’s highest team GPA during the 2020-21 academic year with a 3.94. Placing second overall was the University of Missouri-St Louis women’s tennis team at 3.91, followed by the Tritons women’s golf squad at 3.90. The Rockhurst University women’s tennis program (3.86) and volleyball (3.82) team rounded out the top five.
The GLVC matched last year’s league record with 13 member institutions finishing with 10 or more teams at or above a 3.30. Maryville matched its Conference-best mark from 2019-20 with 17 sports meeting the 3.30 standard.
Eight GLVC members either maintained or increased their totals from a year ago. UMSL led the league in largest academic growth by a GLVC school, having increased their total by six teams, as the Tritons went from eight to 14.
Of the 191 honored programs, 129 came from women’s sports and 62 from the men’s side.
Four league sports – softball (15), women's swimming & diving (nine), women’s tennis (15), volleyball (15) – saw all their teams above the 3.30 mark. Among the other notables, women’s basketball (14), women’s cross country (14), women’s golf (14), and women’s soccer (14) had all but one program meet the threshold.
Of the 129 women’s sports, which include indoor and outdoor track and field as one, eight had more than 80 percent of its participating schools achieve the GPA milestone, including softball (15/15, 100%), tennis (15/15, 100%), swimming & diving (9/9, 100%), volleyball (15/15, 100%), basketball (14/15, 93.3%), cross country (14/15, 93.3%), golf (14/15, 93.3%), and soccer (14/15, 93.3%). Track & Field (11/14) was just shy of the mark at 78.5 percent.
On the men’s side, 10 of 13 golf teams and nine of the 13 tennis squads earned the honor, followed by cross country (10/15), soccer (10/15), baseball (8/15), swimming (6/10), and track & field (5/14) to round out the 62 programs.
For the fifth-straight season, women’s tennis was the sport most commonly found atop each school’s list with five. Women’s golf followed with three, while the remaining seven schools were led by women’s basketball, women’s bowling, men’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, women’s soccer, softball, and men’s tennis.
