Maryville University senior goalie Jena Casagrande has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office Monday. Casagrande posted back-to-back shutouts in 220 minutes in the cage against McKendree and No. 19 Rockhurst last week.
In Wednesday’s make-up contest from a postponed Sept. 7 game due to severe weather, Casagrande recorded three saves in a double-overtime scoreless tie against McKendree, a team that was 3-1 at the time and now 4-1-1 in GLVC play.
Staying with its goalkeeper rotation, Casagrande did not play in the Saints’ 2-1 overtime loss to William Jewell, but she returned to fend off No. 19 Rockhurst for another 0-0 tie in double overtime. Against the Hawks, the Florissant, Mo., native stopped six shots to help Maryville provide Rockhurst its first blemish of the season as the Hawks fell to 5-0-1.
Casagrande, who earns Maryville’s first-ever weekly conference award in women’s soccer, has played in four games in the net this year, with the Saints unbeaten in each of those contests (2-0-2).
On the year, Maryville is 1-3-2 in conference play and 2-5-2 overall.
