Drury University freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Vaught was honored Monday as the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office. Vaught was recognized for her efforts in leading the Panthers to a 1-1-1 mark on the week, including a 1-0-1 record against nationally-ranked conference opponents that helped punched their ticket to the GLVC Championship Tournament.
After seeing limited action in a 3-1 loss to non-conference foe Emporia State on Wednesday, Vaught responded with an impressive five-save shutout in a 2-0 upset win at No. 7 Rockhurst on Friday. She returned to her home field Sunday and was in the cage the entire 110 minutes in a scoreless double-overtime draw to No. 21 and league-leader William Jewell. The Jefferson City, Mo., native stopped four Jewell shots in the tie, which helped Drury secure a bid to the upcoming GLVC Championship Tournament.
This is the first weekly honor for Vaught and the first for a Drury player since Emily Cline was recognized last year on Oct. 17. Her weekly distinction also marks the third-straight week the GLVC Player of the Week accolade has been awarded to a goalkeeper.
Drury closes out the regular season on Wednesday with a home contest against Missouri S&T. The Panthers will then await their seeding for the 2012 GLVC Championship Tournament and begin postseason play on Sunday.
