INDIANAPOLIS – University of Missouri-St. Louis senior forward Charlie Woods has been named by the Great Lakes Valley Conference as the first GLVC Player of the Week for the 2012-13 men’s basketball season. Woods helped GLVC Preseason West Division favorite UMSL to a pair of regional victories in the GLVC-GLIAC Challenge, averaging 15 points and eight rebounds in 28 minutes per game. He also finished with four blocked shots and four assists on the week, while shooting 68.8 percent from the field, including 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from three-point range.
In the Tritons’ 91-71 season-opening victory over Lake Superior State on Friday, Woods finished with seven points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. His efforts helped UMSL to its first win over LSSU in three years of competing in the GLVC-GLIAC Challenge.
On Saturday, Woods then poured in a game-high 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-5 from long range, in a 92-88 win over Northwood.
The Lansing, Mich., native also grabbed nine rebounds and dished out three assists, while going a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line.
Woods garners the first weekly honor of his career and is the first Triton to claim the award since Ryan Lawrence was recognized on Nov. 20, 2009.
