Maryville University junior guard Asa Toney has been recognized as the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, following an abbreviated week of action prior to the holiday break. In observance of Christmas Eve on Monday, the conference office honored Toney on Thursday following a two-game average of 23.0 points on 65.4 percent shooting, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game in a pair of wins for the Saints earlier in the week.
In an 86-54 victory against Missouri Baptist on Monday, Toney recorded his first career double-double with 20 points and a career-high 10 rebounds in just 22 minutes of action. He hit 7-of-9 shots from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, and added four assists without a turnover. The Germantown, Tenn., native helped the Saints reach a season high in scoring with 86 points.
He closed out the shortened week on Wednesday, helping the Saints to a 75-72 win at Lincoln. Toney poured in 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting to go along with five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
On the week, he converted 17-of-26 (.654) shots from the field and was 6-of-11 (.545) from three-point range. He also recorded seven assists and four steals over the two games.
Toney’s honor marks the first GLVC Player of the Week award in the history of the Maryville men’s basketball program.
The Saints (10-2, 1-0 GLVC) are idle until a Dec. 30 road contest at future conference member Truman State.
