INDIANAPOLIS – University of Wisconsin-Parkside senior forward Jeremy Saffold has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, after helping the Rangers to a pair of wins to begin their conference season, including an overtime upset at No. 14 Drury.
In the GLVC opener at Missouri S&T last Thursday, Saffold registered 20 points on 9-of-17 (.529) shooting, while adding four rebounds, two blocks and a steal in 26 minutes of play in the 72-50 victory over the Miners.
The Hazel Crest, Ill., native returned to the court Saturday afternoon and netted 27 points on 8-of-14 (.571) shooting in the Rangers’ 90-88 overtime upset at 14th-ranked Drury. In addition to his scoring output, Saffold notched nine rebounds and a steal in 33 minutes of play.
His weekly average of 23.5 points and 6.5 rebounds helped UW-Parkside to its first 2-0 start in league play under the direction of head coach Luke Reigel.
Saffold leads the conference in scoring at 21.2 points per game, while also rating 18th with 5.6 rebounds each time out.
This is the first weekly honor of Saffold’s career and the first for a Ranger since LaVontax Fenderson was recognized by the league on Dec. 15, 2008.
UW-Parkside (7-3, 2-0 GLVC) returns home this week to conclude cross-divisional conference play with games against Rockhurst on Thursday and William Jewell on Saturday.
