University of Southern Indiana freshman Johnnie Guy and University of Indianapolis senior Ryan Smith have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the league on Wednesday.
Guy captured the 5,000-meter title at the Tom Hathaway Challenge at the University of Indianapolis over the weekend, with a winning time of 14:34.45 (14:25.18 after track conversion). His time established a USI freshman school record in the event. The Palmyra, Ind., native currently ranks second in the GLVC and sixth nationally.
This is the first weekly honor for Guy and the first for a Southern Indiana runner since Michael Jordan was recognized by the league on Jan. 23, 2013.
Smith posted two NCAA provisional qualifying marks at his Tom Hathaway Challenge home meet last weekend with throws of 17.69 meters in the shot put and 19.65 meters in the weight throw. Both marks are tops in the conference this season and rank among the top-five throws nationally.
Smith, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., takes home the second Field Athlete of the Week honor of his career as he was also honored on Feb. 22, 2012.
