INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Saint Joseph’s College’s Sara Somogyi (Chicago, Ill.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week.
Somogyi, a sophomore for the Pumas, earns her second ‘Pitcher of the Week’ award this season after making an appearance in all four of Saint Joseph’s contests last week.
After suffering a 3-0 complete-game loss to Missouri-Rolla in game one on Mar. 17, Somogyi returned in game two to allow just one hit and strike out 16 in an eight-inning relief effort. She allowed the Pumas to pull out the 9-8 win in 15 innings. For the day, she pitched 15 innings and struck out 29 Missouri-Rolla hitters.
She also played a large role in Saint Joseph’s sweep of Rockhurst on Mar. 18. Somogyi fired a complete-game in the Pumas’ 4-2 win and struck out nine in the outing. She returned to start the nightcap and went five strong innings, allowing just three hits and striking out five as the Pumas picked up the 8-0 victory.
For the week, she was 3-1 with a 1.04 earned run average. Somogyi struck out 43 in 27 innings pitched and surrendered just 17 hits in the four games.
On the year, she is 7-3 with a 1.55 ERA and has stuck out 120 hitters in 67.2 innings pitched.
Saint Joseph’s (9-7, 3-1 GLVC) will return to action on Mar. 21 against visiting UIndy.
Other top performances in the GLVC last week included Kentucky Wesleyan’s Haleigh Ashworth, Quincy’s Sarah Ormond and SIU Edwardsville’s Kaitlin Colosimo.
