Bellarmine University junior Robert Sandlin, Jr., and University of Indianapolis senior Ryan Smith have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the league on Wednesday.
Sandlin turned in one of the most impressive individual performances in school history this past week, crossing the tape in 4:05.74 in the mile run at Grand Valley State’s Big Meet, which featured 85 teams and 1,743 competitors. Sandlin’s effort in the mile earned him second among all collegians, shattered his personal best time by eight seconds, and put him seven seconds ahead of the conference’s next best miler on the season. His time, which also broke the program’s oldest indoor school record, set more than 30 years ago, by nearly five seconds, is currently seventh on the NCAA Provisional list.
The Frankfort, Ky., native earns the second weekly honor of his career as he was also recognized by the conference with this season’s first weekly award on Jan. 16.
