Saint Joseph’s College senior third baseman Jake Roberts and William Jewell College redshirt junior pitcher Drew Mitrisin have been named Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. The conference tandem turned in key contributions during team wins last week.
Roberts gave the Pumas an added insurance run in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over in-region foe Tiffin University. SJC scratched across a tough run in the bottom of the sixth with snow flurries falling and temperatures in the teens. After putting runners in scoring position in the next two innings, Roberts came away with one of SJC’s five hits on the day, an RBI-triple over a drawn in centerfielder to score Charlie Dennehey, who led off the inning with single.
Roberts, a native of Anderson, Ind., earns the first weekly award of his career and is the first Puma player to be honored by the conference since Sean Estand on April 4, 2011.
Mitrisin tossed a complete game four-hitter against the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday to help lead the Cardinals to a 6-1 win. In the victory, the Columbia, Mo., native gave up one run and struck out 11 Cougar batters in seven innings of work.
Mitrisin garners his first-ever weekly accolade and is the first Jewell pitcher to win the conference award since Cody Downing was honored on March 26, 2012.
