University of Indianapolis senior infielder Bailey Wittenauer and classmate pitcher Jennifer DeMotte have been selected the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the league on Monday.
Wittenauer batted .529 (9-for-17) with a 62.3 on-base percentage while slugging 1.176 to help Indianapolis to a 5-1 record in the University of North Alabama Invitational. The Lewisville, Texas, native led the Greyhounds in home runs (3), RBIs (8), total bases (20) and walks (4), while adding five runs and two doubles in 21 plate appearances.
Wittenauer started the week going 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs in an 11-2 win over Delta State. On Saturday, she exploded for two homeruns and a double versus North Alabama, followed by a two-hit effort against No. 24 Alabama-Huntsville Sunday. In the second contest, she stroked an RBI double in the top of the ninth inning to help clinch the win. Wittenauer capped the week with a two-run homer against Georgia College & State, and finished all four games at short stop without committing an error.
DeMotte pitched three complete-game wins against Delta State, North Alabama, and Alabama-Huntsville at the Invitational last week. On Sunday, the Indianapolis, Ind., native recorded two shutouts, while also pitching all nine innings in the Greyhounds 9-6 win over Alabama-Huntsville. She collected 16 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched with an ERA of 1.33.
The reigning GLVC Pitcher of the Year held Delta State to just two hits in seven innings in Friday's opening game, then dealt a one-hitter to North Alabama Saturday. She finished her time in Alabama with a gritty nine-inning performance versus the nationally-ranked Lady Chargers, punctuating the victory by retiring the side in order in the bottom of the ninth.
DeMotte is now a perfect 5-0 in the circle this season.
She also did damage at the plate, hitting three home runs, including two versus Alabama-Huntsville, while also driving in seven runs.
Indianapolis (10-2) will have a week off before heading to Kissimmee, Fla., for an eight-game series in the Rebel Spring Games (March 3-7).
