Southern Indiana sophomore first baseman Brooke Harmening and Missouri-St. Louis freshman pitcher Hannah Perryman have been selected the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the league on Monday.
Harmening drove in nine of the Screaming Eagles 12 runs last week. The Whiteland, Ind., native hit .571, registered three homeruns, two doubles, and pitched 30.1 innings in Southern Indiana’s 3-1 showing. After coming on in relief in USI’s 5-3 setback to McKendree in the opener, Harmening pitched 16.1 innings against the Bearcats, and went 2-of-4 at the plate with an RBI, and allowed just two hits. She came back in the second game to toss 10.0 innings, giving up two unearned runs off eight hits.
Her presence at the plate was instrumental in USI’s doubleheader sweep over Bellarmine on Saturday as she drove in all of the Eagles’ runs in both games. For the season, Harmening leads Southern Indiana with a .388 batting average, eight doubles, six home runs, and 27 RBIs, and in the circle she owns a 12-3 record, 1.01 ERA, and a .165 opponent batting average.
Perryman pitched 16 innings in Missouri-St. Louis’ 4-0 showing against Rockhurst and William Jewell, respectively last week after tossing two wins and a save in the circle. In 16.0 innings fanned, she struck out 38 batters to finish with a 0.88 ERA. With the wins, Perryman improved to 10-4 in the circle, and is responsible for five wins in the Tritons’ last 11 contests. The Streamwood, Ill., native leads the Tritons in strikeouts (170), appearances (17), and wins (10), while in league play, she ranks No. 3 in strikeouts looking (27), and batting average (.151), and No. 5 in innings pitched (88.0).
The honor is Harmening’s first of her career since Kristen O'Haver won the award on March 5, 2012. This is the third weekly award for Perryman. She was first recognized by the league on Feb. 18 and March 18 this season.
Southern Indiana (16-9, 6-6 GLVC) returns to action when it visits Kentucky Wesleyan, while Missouri-St. Louis (18-8, 9-1) hosts Maryville in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
