University of Illinois Springfield senior Abby Vorreyer has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Month for March in women’s golf, it was announced by the conference office Thursday following a vote by the league coaches.

Vorreyer competed in four tournaments last month and finished off March in style by winning the Perry Park Invitational against a field of 140 other competitors with a school record 36-hole score of 149.  The Springfield, Ill., native opened with a 77, but closed with an even-par 72, which shattered her own school record of 75, which she set last year.  She birdied the 36th hole in the dark to solidify her spot in the UIS record books, as the previous 36-hole record was 157.

Her efforts helped the Prairie Stars to a fifth-place tie in a 24-team field loaded with regional opponents, including 12 of the top-14 squads ranked within the region.  UIS fired 640 for the event after a pair of rounds of 320.

Prior to the Perry Park Invitational, Vorreyer recorded medalist honors in an 18-hole match against Rend Lake College in Daytona Beach, Fla., and then finished tied for second at the SJC/UIS invite at Whitmoor Country Club in St. Charles, Mo.

Vorreyer opened the month by tying for 34th place with a two-day score of 176 at the Las Vegas Desert Classic.

On the month, the UIS standout finished with a scoring average of 82.8.

This is Vorreyer’s first career monthly honor from the conference and is also the first in program history for UIS.
