University of Indianapolis freshman Allie Smith was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for her performance in the Greyhounds’ 2-0 division wins last week, it was announced by the league office Tuesday.
Smith was undefeated at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles to lead Indianapolis to road victories over Bellarmine and McKendree, respectively. The Greyhounds were the first league team to defeat the Knights behind the efforts of Smith. She teamed with junior Taylor Eckert to earn Indianapolis’ only doubles point with a win at No. 1 over Bellarmine’s Caitlin Hanley and Michelle McFerran, 8-6. She followed that performance in singles dropping the first set to Hanley, but rebounding to win by scores of 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Against McKendree, Smith returned with an 8-2 win in doubles over McKendree’s top duo Adriana Gonzalez and Guiliana Gonzalez. She later defeated Adriana Gonzalez again in singles by shutting her out in the second set 6-4, 6-0.
The Indianapolis, Ind., native leads the Greyhounds with 10 singles wins, including a 5-4 mark at No. 1 singles, while she is 8-8 in doubles, including 5-2 at No. 1 doubles with Eckert.
The honor is Smith’s first of her career, and first for Indianapolis this season.
Indianapolis (6-3, 3-1 GLVC) will close out its regular season at home against Kentucky Wesleyan on Friday at 4 p.m., and Southern Indiana on Saturday at 10 a.m.
