Lewis University junior forward George Thomson and University of Wisconsin-Parkside senior goalkeeper Marcos Perez have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference men’s soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the league office Monday.  The 2013 season marks the first year GLVC men’s and women’s soccer has honored an Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week.

Perez tallied a shutout in his first career start in the season opener against Robert Morris University-Lake County on Thursday before tallying nine saves in a double-overtime 2-2 tie against Saginaw Valley State on Saturday.  Following SVSU’s loss to Lewis on Thursday, the Cardinals headed north to Somers, Wis., where Perez allowed one true goal to the defending national runner-up, as their second goal was an “own goal” following an inadvertent header.  On the week, Perez stopped 10 shots in 200 minutes of play.  He garners his first weekly honor from the GLVC and is the first Ranger to be recognized by the league since Ben Tommerup on Sept. 6, 2005.  Perez is also the younger brother of Victor Perez, who was a two-time All-GLVC goalkeeper in 2004 and 2005, and a GLVC Player of the Week honoree on Sept. 14, 2004.
