University of Indianapolis senior defensive end Vince Maida, Quincy University senior wide receiver Justin Dickens, and Saint Joseph’s College redshirt freshman punter Marcin Gawlak have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Players of the Week, it was announced by the league office Monday. Dickens was named Offensive Player of the Week, Maida was picked as Defensive Player of the Week, while Gawlak was selected as Special Teams Player of the Week.
Maida led the Greyhound defense in Saturday's 17-14 region win at Hillsdale Saturday. The veteran defensive end and team captain was seemingly in the Charger backfield all day, racking up a career-high 2.5 sacks. A native of Orland Park, Ill., Maida’s first sack came in the second quarter and went for a loss of five yards, setting up a 3rd & 11 situation that led to a Greyhound interception. In all, Hillsdale mustered just nine first downs and 145 yards of total offense and scored just one offensive touchdown in the contest on a short three-play, 10-yard scoring drive. The only other TD came on an interception return. Maida's 4.5 sacks on the year lead the GLVC. This is the first weekly honor for Maida and the third GLVC Defensive Player of the Week award for a Greyhound, most recently given to Todd Hacker on Sept. 9, 2013.
