Drury University seniors Will Shadwick and Sari Higgins have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Runners of the Week for men’s and women’s cross country, it was announced by the conference office on Tuesday. It is the first time in conference history two Panther runners have swept the awards in the same week.
Shadwick finished sixth in the 48-runner field at the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree last Saturday, crossing the line in an 8,000-meter time of 26 minutes, 8.26 seconds.
The Fair Grove, Mo., native helped the Panthers finish first overall with 50 points in the small university division, seven markers better than runner-up Oklahoma City. This is the first weekly honor for Shawick and the first time a Panther runner has been recognized by the conference office since Jaime Villa Zapatero was named GLVC Runner of the Week on Sept. 22, 2009.
Higgins placed third overall in a field of 29 runners at the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree last week, finishing with a 5,000-meter time of 19:31.73. Her mark helped Drury take second in the small university division, and was one of four top-10 performances for the Panthers. Drury recorded 39 points on the day, trailing only Midwestern State (20). The Springfield, Mo., native is the first Panther women’s cross country standout to have ever been named GLVC Runner of the Week.
The Drury sweep of weekly honors marks the second-straight instance for a GLVC program as Bellarmine’s Robert Sandlin and Emily Frith was named Runners of the Week on Sept. 24, 2013.
Next up for both Drury cross country squads teams will be the Missouri S&T Jackling Jocks Invitational in Rolla, Mo., on Oct. 12.
