Maryville University senior defender Sam Kruse and University of Indianapolis redshirt-junior goalkeeper Megan Fee have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference women's soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Despite being positioned as a defender, Kruse helped the Saints on all fronts this past week while leading them to their first two victories of the season. Maryville topped Southern Indiana 4-1 on Friday and closed out the weekend with a 3-1 victory over Illinois Springfield, which marked the first time the Saints won consecutive GLVC games since Sept. 30 and Oct. 2, 2011. Kruse had one goal and three assists for five points last week, playing a part in four of the seven goals, which also marked the most netters for Maryville in back-to-back games since the Saints tallied 13 goals on Oct. 22 and Oct. 25, 2008. The Waterloo, Ill., native had the game-winning goal against Illinois Springfield on a free kick after picking up the assist on the game's first goal. She also assisted on the game winner versus Southern Indiana to go with another assist from earlier in the match. This is the first weekly honor of Kruse's career and only the second-ever for a Maryville player as Jena Casagrande earned the program's first Player of the Week honors on Sept. 24, 2012.
