University of Southern Indiana senior forward Aaron Nelson has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Nelson led the Screaming Eagles to a pair of victories to start the 2013-14 season by averaging a double-double with 21.0 points and 11.0 rebounds. He started the week with a double-double in USI’s 70-61 win at rival Kentucky Wesleyan, posting 11 points and 11 rebounds. He also dished out a team-high five assists.
The Chicago Heights, Ill., native finished the week by propelling USI to a dramatic one-point win over Lake Erie in the home-opener, 90-89. He recorded a game-high and career-best 31 points, including 10 points during the decisive 22-8 run in the final six minutes of the game. He also grabbed another 11 rebounds, while shooting 75 percent (12-of-16) from the field.
In addition to averaging 21.0 points and 11 rebounds per game, Nelson averaged 3.5 assists and 2.0 blocks per game, while finishing an impressive 69.6 percent (16-of-23) from the floor in the two games.
This is the second weekly honor of Nelson’s career as he was also recognized by the conference on Jan. 21, 2013. He is the first Eagle to claim award since Keith DeWitt on Feb. 18, 2013.
USI continues its four-game homestand Nov. 29-30 when it faces King University and Indiana University Southeast in USI’s Bill Joergens Memorial Classic, which also features third-ranked Bellarmine.
