INDIANAPOLIS – William Jewell College junior Matthew Luton has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week, it was announced by the league office Tuesday following a vote from the conference's head coaches.

Luton won three events at the University of Chicago's Phoenix Fall Classic last week, which included an NCAA B Cut and three personal-best times.  He captured the 1,650-yard Freestyle title in an NCAA B Cut time of 16:05.72, beating his previous personal best by 12.5 seconds.  The Parkville, Mo., native also earned first-place finishes in the 500 Free (4:40.93) and 200 Free (1:42.14), the latter of which improved on his personal record by 1.4 seconds.  In addition to his individual swims, he also led off the 400 Freestyle Relay in a lifetime best time of :47.73, and swam on the 200 Free Relay and 800 Free Relay teams.  His performance helped the Cardinals to a second-place team finish behind the host institution.

Luton is the first Jewell swimmer to earn a GLVC Athlete of the Week award.

The William Jewell men's team will be back in action on Dec. 16-17, competing in a GLVC dual meet at Lewis University.
