INDIANAPOLIS – Southern Indiana junior and track newcomer Julia Kohnen and Missouri S&T senior pole vaulter Taylor Cipicchio have been respectively named the first Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week of the 2013-14 season.
Kohnen, who recently exhausted her eligibility in soccer at USI, posted an NCAA II provisional qualifying time of five minutes, 3.33 seconds in the mile at the University of Indianapolis Gerry England Alumni Opener Saturday night in Indianapolis. Her time ranks first in both the GLVC and NCAA Division II.
The honor is the first GLVC weekly award for Kohnen in any sport and is the first GLVC Indoor Track Athlete of the Week award for a USI women's competitor since Erika Wilson garnered the accolade on Jan. 23, 2013.
Cipicchio won the Pole Vault at the Titan First Chance Meet hosted by Illinois Wesleyan with a lifetime best, school record, and NCAA provisional mark of 12 feet, 5.50 inches. The mark ranks her first among GLVC vaulters and fourth in the country.
This is the first weekly indoor award for Cipicchio and the first for an S&T standout since Molly Clement was honored as GLVC Field Athlete of the Week on Feb. 1, 2012.
