Missouri S&T senior sprinter Adriel Hawkins and University of Indianapolis sophomore jumper Josh Bass have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, it was announced on Wednesday.
Hawkins ran a time of 21.64 seconds last Friday at the Missouri Southern Invitational to surpass the automatic standard and break the S&T record that he set just a week ago by 0.11 seconds. He finished second in the event to Missouri Southern's Jeffrey Fraley, who edged him at the finish line by one-hundredths of a second – giving the top two finishers the two fastest times in the event in NCAA Division II this season. Earlier in the evening, Hawkins qualified for Saturday's final in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.92 seconds, which won his heat and was the third-best mark in the preliminaries. He would later finish second in the finals in 6.90 seconds.
The Jefferson City, Mo., native earns his second consecutive weekly honor and the third of his indoor career as he was also recognized by the league as Track Athlete of the Week on Feb. 20, 2013.
