INDIANAPOLIS – University of Indianapolis junior Zach Jacobs and Lewis University junior Eann Cox have been respectively named the Great Lakes Valley Conference's first Player and Pitcher of the Week for the 2014 baseball season, it was announced by the conference office Monday.
Playing in his first season in a Greyhound uniform, Jacobs went 6-for-10 from the dish while helping UIndy to a 2-1 non-conference record at Missouri S&T last weekend, totaling three RBIs and two runs scored with a homer and a triple.
In UIndy's season opener, Jacobs was part of a four-run first inning that propelled the Hounds to a 10-0 win over the Miners. His one-out single in his first at-bat scored a run, marking the first RBI of his UIndy career. The center fielder then launched a solo homerun in the top of the fourth, extending the Hounds' lead. In the second game Saturday, Jacobs went a perfect 3-for-3, finishing with an RBI and run scored. He hit a triple in the sixth inning that plated UIndy's second run, and the Greyhounds went on to win 6-1 over S&T. Jacobs capped the weekend with a 1-for-4 day at the plate in the Hounds' 5-4 loss in the series finale.
Cox, a native of Erie, Ill., scattered two hits and two walks while striking out seven batters over seven innings in a 4-1 win over Ohio Dominican on Sunday.
Both players earned the first weekly award of their career. Cox is the first Flyer pitcher to each the league's weekly honor since Pat Lahey on March 1, 2010, while Jacobs is the first Hound to be selected since Jake Hartley on April 22, 2013.
