INDIANAPOLIS – University of Southern Indiana outfielder Tyler Mikrut and University of Illinois Springfield pitcher Barry Arnett have been respectively named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, it was announced by the conference office Monday.
Mikrut, a native of Edwardsville, Ill., was lauded for his efforts in the three-game sweep of Tiffin University last week. He hit .455 (5-11) with five runs scored, five RBIs, and a pair of doubles in the three games. His big game of the week was the series opener. He was two-for-three and accounted for five of the eight USI runs, scoring twice and driving in three runs.
Arnett is the first-ever UIS baseball player to earn the league's weekly honor. The Bartonville, Ill., native led the Prairie Stars to a 4-1 victory against Northwood (Mich.) in the season-opener on Friday. He tossed eight innings of one-run ball, allowing five hits and striking out seven. Arnett threw four perfect innings before allowing a baserunner in the fifth on a base hit.
