Drury sophomore Hadeli Ali was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office Tuesday.
Ali was a flawless 6-0 last week for the Lady Panthers as No. 21 Drury (14-2, 3-0 GLVC) earned league wins over Rockhurst (8-1), Maryville (9-0), and Missouri-St. Louis (5-4), respectively.
The Berkeley, Ca., native was 3-0 at the No. 1 singles position. Ali topped Rockhurst’s Emma Schelbe 6-0, 3-6, 10-8, before downing Maryville’s Philine Schlorf by a 3-6, 6-4, 10-1 score. She closed the week with her third straight-sets win, as she defeated Missouri-St. Louis’ Nina Bellanger, 6-3, 6-1.
Competing at No. 2 doubles with Samanta Zambrano, the Drury duo edged Schelble and Alex Schelbe of Rockhurst, 8-3 to open the week. Ali and Zambrano then raced past Maryville’s Anne Lutz and MaKenna Parker, 8-0, before closing the week with a 9-8 (7-4) victory over UMSL’s Natalia Carvalhais and Lina Parra.
On the season, Ali is 11-4 in singles play and 13-3 in doubles action. In the recent ITA poll (March 26), she jumped eight spots to No. 34, and is No. 3 in the Midwest Region.
This is Ali’s first weekly honor and the first for a Drury player since Beatriz Juan was honored on April 3, 2012.
