INDIANAPOLIS – Lewis University junior Andrew McLain and Missouri S&T junior Joe Vellella have been named the 2014 season's first Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, it was announced on Thursday.
McLain was runner-up in the 5,000 meters at the Washington University Invitational this past Friday, crossing the line in 14 minutes, 15.55 seconds. The effort was a personal best for McLain, and also gave him a mark that ranks first in the conference and second nationally.
The honor is McLain's second of his outdoor career as he was first honored on May 3, 2011. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native is the first Flyer representative to be tabbed GLVC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week since Scott Tanis on April 24, 2012.
Vellella finished first in the hammer throw at the Washington University Invitational with a provisional mark of 193'-07", which ranks him second in the GLVC and sixth nationally. The Piasa, Ill., native also placed seventh in the discus at 143'00" – an effort that is second-best in the conference.
Vellella nabs is second GLVC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week accolade as he was also the last Miner recognized by the conference on April 24, 2013.
