University of Wisconsin-Parkside senior Jessica Watychowicz and University of Indianapolis senior Tatiana Zhuravleva have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, it was announced on Friday.
Watychowicz posted the season’s fastest 5,000-meter time in NCAA Division II last Friday in California at the Stanford Invitational, which also marked her first race for the Rangers in over a year. The Burbank, Ill., native placed sixth in her heat with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 16 minutes, 38.65 seconds. The senior was one of just two non-Division I student-athletes in the 22-woman field and her time currently ranks as the top performance in Division II this outdoor season by almost six seconds. Her time additionally shattered a school record in the event, previously held by Jessica Lamp-Monson who ran a 16:40.10 at the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State University in 2009.
Watychowicz earns her third career weekly honor in the outdoor season as she was previously recognized as GLVC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week in back-to-back weeks (April 17-24) in 2012.
