INDIANAPOLIS – Maryville freshman Adriana Armendariz was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office Tuesday.
Armendariz posted a 4-0 record last week against division foes Truman State and Quincy, respectively. Teaming with freshman Philine Schlorf, she went 2-0 in doubles play, defeating Truman State’s Kim Birenbaum and Marisa Thome (8-2) and Quincy’s Amy Kuhle and Allison Callahan (8-5) in the top doubles match. In singles play, Armendariz rallied to win the final and decisive match to help the Saints qualify for their first GLVC Tournament. Against Truman State’s Lauren Jin, she won the first set 6-1, before dropping the second set 3-6, and swept an important third set 6-0 to give the Saints a 6-3 team victory.
In the regular-season finale at Quincy, the team score was tied 4-4 with Armendariz trailing in the final match. She rallied to defeat the Lady Hawks’ Elizabeth Kuenzi 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 at No. 2 in the Saints 5-4 victory. Armendariz owns a 22-9 combined singles/doubles ledger, including 9-6 in singles and sports a 13-3 mark in doubles play.
The Madrid, Spain, native earns her first career weekly honor and first tennis accolade for Maryville since joining the league in 2008.
Maryville (14-5, 3-3 GLVC) enter the championship as the West No. 4 seed and is set to face the East's top-seed Lewis (12-3, 6-0) at Dwight Davis Tennis Center Friday, April 18. Frist serve is at 12 p.m.
