Drury University sophomore designated hitter Payton Reed and Quincy University junior pitcher Cody King have been named the final Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week of the season, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Reed hit .733 in a four-game sweep of Maryville this past week with seven hits in 10 plate appearances, while registering a 1.600 slugging percentage and a .733 on base percentage. The Springfield, Mo., native homered three times, drove home 10 RBIs, scored seven runs and was walked four times. In Saturday's 11-2 opener Reed was 3-for-3, blasted a pair of homers and had three hits, three RBIs, three runs scored and one walk. He followed that game up with his third homer of the day in the 11-6 nightcap win for two RBIs and was walked twice in his one at bat. His slugging percentage for the day was 3.250 and his on base percentage Saturday was .875. In Sunday's 11-0 opener, Reed had two hits, three RBIs and scored a run in his two at bats and was walked once. In the Panthers' 7-1 finale, he had one hit, two RBIs and scored a run in his four at bats.
King tossed a complete game shutout in game two on Saturday against Rockhurst, helping Quincy to a four-game sweep to clinch the fourth seed in this week's GLVC Championship Tournament. The Kirksville, Mo. native threw a two-hit shutout allowing no walks and striking out four batters in the Hawks' 5-0 win. King has now thrown five consecutive complete games allowing just four earned runs during that time. The redshirt junior boasts a team-low 1.60 ERA with a record of 5-2 in eight starts.
