INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Lewis University’s Cory Mastey (Tinley Park, Ill.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. The junior forward guided the Flyers to a pair of wins over the weekend including a 3-2 victory over 5th-ranked Lincoln Memorial.
Mastey netted two goals in Lewis’ 3-2, double overtime, win over Tusculum on Aug. 24 including the game-winner 23 seconds into the second overtime period. He opened the scoring for the Flyers as well by posting his first goal of the season at the 27:55 mark of the first half.
Lewis topped host Lincoln Memorial on Aug. 26 by a score of 3-2. Mastey was instrumental in the Flyers success against the Railsplitters by playing a hand in all three goals. He scored two goals in the first five minutes of the contest to push the Flyers to a 2-0 lead. Mastey then assisted on the game-winning goal by teammate Nestor Hernandez in the 52nd minute.
The pair of wins marks the third time in the past four seasons the Flyers have opened the year with a 2-0 record. Mastey has nine points through the first two contests and leads all GLVC players in goals and points after the opening weekend of play.
Lewis will return home this week to face Upper Iowa on Aug. 29 and Northwood on Sept. 1.
