INDIANAPOLIS – Bellarmine University sophomore forward Mary Beth Gorham and Quincy University freshman goalkeeper Megan Swanson have been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week in women’s soccer, it was announced by the league office Monday.
Bellarmine posted two come-from-behind victories over the weekend in GLVC play, and both times Gorham was the catalyst for the comeback as she netted the tying goal in each game before the Knights pulled out wins. Against Saint Joseph’s on Friday, Bellarmine trailed 2-1 early in the second half when Gorham raced in to rebound a shot and put it away to tie the game. The Knights ultimately won 4-2. On Sunday, Bellarmine trailed Indianapolis 1-0 at halftime before the reigning GLVC Freshman of the Year took a pass deep in the right elbow of the box and laced a left-footer into the net in the 53rd minute to knot it up with her sixth goal of the season, which is just one score shy of the conference lead. The Knights scored in overtime to pull out a 2-1 victory and improved to 5-1-0 in the GLVC. On the week, Gorham had two goals on seven shots, six of which were on goal, during a total of 125 minutes played. The Nicholasville, Kentucky native earns her second career weekly award as she was also recognized on Nov. 4, 2013 – the last time a BU standout was honored by the league.
